Conservation
This page is dedicated to those organization whose central purpose is the preservation and conservation of Atlanta’s parks, neighborhoods, nature preserves, etc. I’m always adding to this list, so please feel free to share with me an organization that you’re particularly fond of!
- Piedmont Park Conservancy
- Atlanta Preservation Center
- The Nature Conservancy
- Georgia Conservancy
- Grant Park Conservancy
- Historic Fourth Ward Park Conservancy
- Three Forks Heritage Alliance
- Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve (formerly the South Peachtree Creek Preserve, this is a hidden 28 acre gem in Decatur in between Medlock Park and the back of North DeKalb Mall)
- Little Creek Farm Conservancy (more commonly known as the “horse park” in Decatur near the intersection of Lawrenceville Highway and N. Druid Hills / Valley Brook, across from the Quick Trip)
- Glenn Creek Nature Preserve
- Olmsted Linear Park Alliance
- DeKalb County Parks & Recreation Facilities
- Oakhurst Community Garden (a wonderful Decatur neighborhood garden focused on education, conservation, and gardening; this could also go under my food page since you can have your own garden plot here; and be sure to check out their plant sales twice a year!)
- Lake Claire Land Trust (another community garden in Lake Claire in between Candler Park and Little Five Points; at the dead end of Arizona Avenue, you probably wouldn’t know this enclave exists unless someone let you in on the secret; and it’s much more than a garden, with a stage, amphitheater, & firepit, outdoor kitchen, drum circles, monthly potlucks, meditation areas, and tree-climbing next door)
- Burnt Fork Creek (this creek runs through Decatur where it merges with the South Fork of the Peachtree Creek in Mason Mill and Melton Parks near Emory University)
- Heritage Sandy Springs
- The Woodlands (a seven acre greenspace in the heart of Decatur with an Historic Garden featuring camellias, hydrangeas, Japanese maples and much more, the 60 year gardening project of the family that donated the land. They have undertaken to plant a Piedmont Native Garden of trees, shrubs and perennials. The Woodlands Midweek Gardeners meet every other Wednesday morning for light gardening, good conversation, and occasional field trips. Saturday workdays occur about four times a year as needed, and usually focus on larger tasks like trail maintenance or tree planting. Contact Ruby Bock, Garden Manager, at 404.273.1464, or visit www.decaturpreservationalliance.org for more information.)
